Description

The Fire-Eye Red-Eye Instrument Preamp is a compact, professional direct-connect preamplifier designed primarily for musical instruments equipped with high-impedance piezoelectric pickups. Its impedance-matching input circuit is specifically engineered to work with passive piezo pickups, helping preserve a natural, balanced acoustic tone with low noise, low distortion, and generous headroom.

The Red-Eye is also compatible with active piezo systems and magnetic pickups, making it suitable for electric guitars, electric basses, and a wide variety of acoustic instruments. Its field-effect transistor input is designed to match and track the impedance characteristics of passive piezo pickups, delivering a smooth and natural response even during aggressive or percussive playing.

Natural Tone & Reliable Signal Processing

The Red-Eye provides a low-impedance balanced XLR output for direct connection to mixing consoles, PA systems, audio interfaces, and other professional equipment. A ground-lift switch helps minimize unwanted ground-loop noise.

The built-in Boost control provides additional volume for solos, while the dedicated Treble control allows you to add or reduce high-frequency content. With the Treble control centered, the response remains flat for a neutral signal.

Power Options

The Red-Eye can normally be powered using 48V XLR phantom power, while an internal 9V battery provides a convenient alternative. It also accepts an external 9–18V center-negative or center-ground power supply.

The internal 9V battery provides approximately 200 hours of operation and is automatically disconnected when external power is supplied. The preamp activates when an instrument is connected or external power is applied.

A power-check LED briefly illuminates during startup when adequate power is detected. When operating from the internal battery, the indicator provides a quick check of remaining battery capacity.

Connectivity:

  • Instrument input
  • Low-impedance balanced XLR output
  • 1/4" output
  • 1/4" input/output for effects accessory loop
  • Ground-lift switch

Lifetime guarantee unconditional

I love the simplicity and effectiveness that these offer, and so do the sound engineers I work with.

The best part for me as a working musician is the unconditional lifetime guarantee. I straight up broke my boost switch by stomping on it. Not a problem. Full repair. Even offered to replace it with a brand new one if my schedule was too tight to wait for the fix.

Outstanding preamp

I added this to my latest guitar build with a K & K mini. I am very happy with the transparent and balanced tone, and I love the gain switch for when I solo or move into finger-picking.

Sounds fantastic

Sounds fantastic with my guild acoustic guitar and 5 string violin (both acoustic and electric). I was worried about having less eq options coming from a baggs venue di, but the treble roll off is plenty. Boost sounds great as well.

Just what I was looking for

This pre amp works well with my two Mandolins which have K+K passive pickups.

Great sound for my mandolin

I bought this to use with my mandolin using a Baggs mandoling pick-up. Previously, I tried it with my Baggs Para EQ, which I have used with multible acoustic guitars for 15+ years, with less than stellar results. With the Para EQ there was a definate thump coming from the pickup being attached to the body of the mandolin. After trying the Red-Eye Instrument Preamplifier, the problem of too much thump has been drastically reduced! Great piece of gear from a great seller.

Transparent Sound, Transparently Easy to Use, AWESOME Customer Service!

I decided to try the Red-Eye pre-amp after trying another brand that added so much 'color' (muddy-ness) to my sound that I couldn't use it at all. The Red-Eye provided crystal clear amplification with no added bass or treble to your music.

I also have to comment on the incredible service I received from Darren at Fire-Eye. Wow! I had a couple of basic questions that I needed answers to, so I wrote an e-mail to the address in the brochure at 8:00 PM on a Sunday night and had a crystal clear answer before went to bed.

I can't say enough about how happy I am with the whole experience!
