Same hardware, different finish and firmware. A side-by-side of the Valeton GP-200, GP-200X and GP-200R, and which one to buy.

Short answer: The Valeton GP-200, GP-200X and GP-200R have the same hardware and core features: 240+ effects, 140+ amp and cab models, 8 footswitches, a built-in expression pedal and a USB audio interface. The GP-200R is the GP-200 in a colored finish. The GP-200X is a 10th-anniversary edition with a navy and red finish, updated firmware algorithms, faster footswitch response, a more accurate tuner and 28 artist presets.

Three model names, one platform. If you are deciding between them, you are mostly choosing a finish and a firmware package. Here is what Valeton says is shared, and what is not.

What does the GP-200X add?

Valeton describes the GP-200X's features and functions as identical to the GP-200. The additions are:

  • A navy blue and red electroplated finish.
  • 10th-anniversary firmware with new algorithms, an anniversary start screen and faster footswitch response.
  • A more accurate tuner and selectable expression pedal curves.
  • 28 new presets from 12 collaborating artists.
  • An anniversary gift box with a pick and pick-holder keychain.

What is the GP-200R?

Valeton lists the GP-200R as having the same performance as the GP-200, in a colored finish. Choose it if you prefer the look; there is no functional trade-off.

GP-200X

The GP-200X makes the most sense as a gift or if you value the newer tuner and pedal-curve options. Valeton does not say whether the anniversary algorithms will come to the GP-200 by firmware update, so do not count on it.

What should you add to a GP-200?

  • A second expression pedal or footswitch on the TRS control jack, such as the Hotone Ampero II Press, for volume and wah at the same time. You will find it with our other effects and pedal accessories.
  • Good instrument and patch cables. Many tone complaints with a new multi-effects unit come from a failing cable.

We explain how expression pedals, footswitches and MIDI controllers work together in Expression Pedals and MIDI Controllers for Multi-Effects. All three GP-200 models are in our effects and pedals collection, shipped from the US with free shipping over $40.
